Responsible Investing
United Church Funds (UCF) offers investors the unique opportunity to align their values with their desire to maximize endowment and other assets, believing solid returns can coexist with socially responsible investing (SRI), which is managed through UCF's office of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
Social screens offer a starting point for UCF's SRI strategy, establishing the percentage of revenue a corporation may derive from particular products or services before its stock may no longer be held by UCF —
| Alcohol | 10% |
| Gambling | 10% |
| Tobacco | 1% |
| Conventional weapons | 10% |
| Nuclear weapons | 5% |

More than simply screening-out selected investments, however, United Church Funds engages in active shareholder collaboration with ecumenical partners and the Interfaith Center for Corporate Responsibility. In addition to voting proxies in a manner that reflects UCC values around issues of human health and dignity, environmental integrity and moral responsibility, UCF often joins other investors in advancing shareholder resolutions, such as those demanding greater transparency in corporate governance. UCF also seeks to comply with General Synod resolutions that call on the church to use its economic power to promote justice and peace.
UCF's social responsibility ministry is led by CSR Officer Katie O'Neill McCloskey, who also serves The Pension Boards UCC. Katie currently serves on the board of directors of the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility, a consortium of faith-based investors who repesent over $10 billion in assets under management. With 10 years of experience in communications, marketing and advocacy, Katie has worked for not-for-profit organizations focused on leadership and women's rights, incuding the Institute for Women's Policy Research. A Brooklyn resident, she volunteers as a fundraiser for several local community arts organizations.
